I pray that the prospective residents/family feel the love and experience the genuine kindness when they walk through the doors of Harbison Shores in Irmo! My mom has been a resident since 2018. Unfortunately not all the past experiences have been pleasant, but so far under this management I sense a more resident/family centered facility. Everyone is amazing, from the maintenance staff, to the administrator! I have heard caregivers affectionately calling my mom, “mom” or “grandma” depending on their age; telling her they love her while putting her to bed with big good night hug! They comb her ...hair in different styles and allow her to look in the mirror to see how absolutely beautiful she is when it could be just as easy to let her remain looking disheveled. I’ve seen the maintenance staff take the time to talk to her and sing to her just as if she were their mom! The nurse and administrator listens to the family and implement actions that’s in the best interest of the resident. Needless to say this makes my heart smile and I will be forever grateful to the staff of Harbison Shores for how they LOVE my mom in my absence.

National Assisted Living Week was established in 1995 to celebrate the role assisted living communities play in senior care and the relationships that form between caregivers and residents due to their time spent together. This year National Assisted Living week is Sunday, September 10th through Saturday September 16, 2017. The theme for this year is Family is Forever and was inspired by this quote from Maya Angelou:
“Family isn’t always blood, it’s the people in your life who want you in theirs: the ones who accept you for who you are, the ones who would do anything to see you smile and love you no matter what.”
This week is the perfect time to celebrate the beautiful relationship that forms between staff and residents at Assisted Living communities. It truly takes a special person to be a caregiver. You have a huge impact on the people around you. You not only take care of residents, but you become their family, forming bonds that cannot be broken. Someone that they not only rely on, but enjoy spending time with.
The caregivers and staff at Assisted Living communities become residents’ second family. They are the eyes and ears that observe things about their residents and relay these observations to their family members. They are the ones who notice if there is a change in a resident’s appetite or health. Caregiving staff works as a team to provide the best care to residents, providing them with the love and respect a family member would. We are very thankful to all of the awesome caregivers that are dedicated to caring for our residents every single day.
National Assisted Living Week is also to celebrate our wonderful residents. It is an honor to not only care for you, but to know you and be part of your life. Caregivers, be sure to express your thanks and appreciation for all the assisted living residents you care for.
Spend National Assisted Living week enjoying time spent together; caregivers and residents alike.
