My Mother and her cat moved to Harbison Shores about a month and a half ago. Mother made the decision to move to assisted living herself, and we were very blessed that CarePatrol helped us find Harbison Shores shortly after she made the decision. Mother keeps telling us how content she is to be at Harbison Shores and how safe she feels, and the cat has settled in nicely as well. The staff and leadership team have all been lovely to work with. We have very much appreciated how responsive they all are to our requests and emails, and how ...kind they are to the residents. The wooded setting and outdoor areas are calming and beautiful, and Mother's apartment is perfect. Having Mother at Harbison Shores has lifted many anxieties from all our shoulders!

As we age, our bodies experience various levels of physical change. Things like decreased muscle strength and balance can consequently affect our ability to live out an active lifestyle. Physical therapy is defined as the preservation, enhancement, or restoration of movement and physical function. For seniors, physical therapy has many benefits, and our team at Harbison Shores provides you the resources and opportunities for all of your physical therapy needs.
Physical therapy has 4 main benefits for seniors:
Treat Chronic Pain
Research shows that most individuals over age 65 suffer from some form of arthritis or osteoporosis. Physical therapy helps target specific pain points by strengthening joints and reducing symptoms. Therapists also focus on stretches and exercises to reduce and prevent discomfort you may be experiencing.
Reduce Risk of Falling
Physical therapy is designed to increase stability and balance, which naturally become more difficult as we age. Whether you live alone or are a resident in our assisted living or memory care community, we want to reduce your risk of falling. In physical therapy, you will focus on balance techniques, stability exercises, and specific exercises to prevent falling.
Decrease Risk of Injury - muscle strength and flexibility
For aging seniors, it is common to lose muscle mass, making you more prone to injury. In physical therapy, light weight, resistance, and body weight exercises are strategically used to help seniors maintain muscle strength. Extension exercises and consistent stretches are also beneficial techniques when working to decrease the risk of injury.
Overall Independence and Health
Taking part in a physical therapy program is beneficial to your physical health, as well as your mental, emotional, and social wellbeing. With strength and mobility comes increased independence and fulfillment. Being strong enough to engage in activities you enjoy increases your quality of life. Maintaining a healthy weight and physique positively benefits your overall health and retirement living.
Physical therapy at any stage in life is beneficial for our bodies and health. You will find that helping our residents create and maintain healthy habits and exercise routines is a priority at Harbison Shores. We encourage you to get involved in physical therapy, no matter what background you come from, and experience the opportunity for an active lifestyle and improved quality of life in Irmo, South Carolina!
